The Membership elected Wilbert Smale as Commodore, Leo Wubbe as Vice Commodore and Harry MacFarlane as Rear Commodore. During January the Club held an old-fashioned box social and bidding for dinners was spirited - and expensive. The Galley area was extended because the International House had made the old "head-rooms" available. At last the galley area had a window looking out to sea, a warm friendly round table, captain’s chairs and it became a truly intimate place to discuss a lost race over hot coffee. Square dances were held once each in the months of March and April. April 16 was the date of the Commodore’s Ball, which was held again in the Pompeian room in the Whittier. August was an important sailing month. The Mallory Cup Finals were held on August 15 and 16, the Thistle Nationals on August 23, 24 and 25, and the Club regatta on August 27. Leaders in the Wednesday Night Lightning races were O’Hara, Roney, Leverence, Crandall, Northmore and Fairchild, in that order. Our Junior Skippers, Jim Millies, Otto Scherer, Chuck Reader and alternate Jay Goetchus, won the Wakefield series at Mentor Harbor, Ohio. On September 17, Crescent had another of the popular New England Shore Dinners — a sell-out again! As usual, in October, the Club again hosted the DRYA Catboat series and thrust in a Raven Regatta for good measure. In the Sunday Morning Lightning races O’Hara, Leverence and Crandall-Northmore finished one, two, and three. A square dance called by the Raes opened the fall entertainment on November 19 and of course; both closed the old year and opened the new with the usual New Years party in the Clubhouse. |
